‘Artificial Natural History’ is an ongoing book & fine-art print project that explores speculative, artificial life through the lens of a “natural history book that never was”.
By using artificial neural networks (AI) to generate these images, the very renaissance project of humanism coupled with the scientific project of categorisation and systematisation become a mutable, distorted aesthetic surface wherein the specimens, and their indecipherable descriptions, regain some unknowable agency.
The specimens of artificial natural history both celebrate and play with the seemingly endless diversity of the natural world, one that we still have very limited comprehension and awareness of.
